Monroe County, Fort McCoy, and the Mississippi River Regional Planning Commission (MRRPC) have teamed up in securing funding from the Department of Defense to undertake a Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) involving Fort McCoy and its surrounding communities. This study will involve developing strategies and projects designed to improve compatibility between the Fort and surrounding land owners, communities, government agencies, businesses, and institutions. When the JLUS is completed, it will include recommendations that demonstrate that the Fort and surrounding communities are interested in improving compatibility. Many other communities around the nation with major military installations have undertaken Joint Land Use Studies. This study and the actions resulting from it may help influence a positive result for Fort McCoy in the next Base Realignment and Closing (BRAC) process, but is no guarantee that Fort McCoy, with its $1.4 billion annual impact on the regional economy, will continue. The first public meeting explaining the JLUS process was held on September 27th 2011 at the Rolling Hills Auditorium, 14345 County Hwy B, Sparta, WI. Three more meetings including a public information meeting will be held in 2010 and 2011.
